Chinqually Skills Camp 28 July 2021

Overview:

All coaches should be at Horizon point no later than 8:30 on Wednesday dressed to play. Sam will arrive at 8:00 with Sebastian and set up the field and the Snack Shack.

When the kids arrive we will immediately start kicking around with them. Then Sam will welcome them and break them down into two teams. Each group will go to their Team Coach. Team coaches will introduce themselves and have each kid share their name.

Teams will then follow the schedule below.

Coaches will either be Team Coaches responsible for the training and safety of their assigned team or Skills Coaches responsible for running their specific training.

During the first extended snack break Alex and Luke will demonstrate shooting. During the second extended break coaches will play 3v2+keeper to demonstrate shooting and defending.

      Skills Training:

Cycle 1 will consist of shielding and the step over and shot.

Alex J will train the shielding and Luke will train the step over and shot.

Each team will do each training station once.

      Cycle 1 Shielding (Alex):

      Focus areas:

      • body between the ball and the defender
      • bend your knees - get low
      • arms up
      • stay on your toes and move
      • keep heads up

      Drill:

Start by demonstrating how to shield with one of the other coaches.

Then partner the players up with one ball per pair. Have one player practice shielding and the other defending starting at about 50% speed. Coaches help the players get the basics right. Then have them switch.

Once they do that play Sam's sharks and minnows where all of the players except 2 have a ball. All of the players are in a 20x20 coned off box. The players with the ball are not allowed to dribble around. They may make minor touches on the ball, but no dribbling around. The sharks try and kick the balls out. Once their ball is kicked out they exit the box.

After one iteration of Sharks and Minnows have them pair up with someone else and repeat this. Focus on the basics and getting the form right and then practice in Sharks and Minnows and repeat until the Cycle ends.

Cycle 1 Step over and shoot (Luke):

      Focus areas:

      • Distance from defender when you make the move
      • Step around the ball
      • Fake with upper body
      • Tap and go the other direction

      Drill

Give every player a ball and set up 10 or so standing triangle cones spread out in a 30x30 area. Have players slowly dribble toward a random cone and practice left footed and right footed step overs. Start slow with them getting the rhythm of it. Then have them do it faster and faster. Then have them get in a line about 10 yards away from a corner flag that is 15 yards away from the goal. They then dribble and throw their move both left and right against the flag and shoot into the undefended goal. Once they have this have them repeat this against the coach who is defending as a replacement for the corner flag.

This series of drills is a slow build up with the goal of getting them good at the step over leading to a shot.

      Cycle 2 Shooting a moving-bouncing ball (Alex)

Demonstrate how to shoot a bouncing-moving ball. Then have the players do a basic drill and then a move advanced drill.

      Focus areas:

      • Plant foot
      • Time shot for when the ball is coming down
      • Strike center of ball with follow through
      • Lock shooting foot down

      Drill

Have the players get in a line about ten yards above the 18. The coach does a slow push pass along the 18 and the player at the front of the line runs up and one touch shoots the ball. Have another coach then pull that player aside and help him or her fix one thing. That player gets back in line. Players keep cycling through the line. Once they have the basics of this down then repeat this, but with their left foot.

As time permits go back to the right foot and give them a bouncing ball and repeat the process. If they achieve any mastery of this and if time permits attempt this with the left foot.

Cycle 2 Fake shot and shoot (Luke)

      Drill

Same basic flow as the step over, but this time using a fake shot instead of the step over.

Give every player a ball and set up 10 or so standing triangle cones spread out in a 30x30 area. Have players slowly dribble toward a random cone and practice left footed and right footed fake shot moves.
