Overview:
This is our third week of practice following the weekly learning framework of tactical-technical-tactical. The theory behind this is to introduce a tactical situation during the first week at the two practices. In this case it was building out of the back from a goal kick. Coaches and players identify what skills need to be improved to effectively execute the tactical task. The second week, which is the technical week, we focus on those technical skills during that week's two practices which in this case was passing and trapping. The third week we focus on the original tactical task to cement the tactical decision making and technical skills development in conducting the tactical task. This is the third week and we are still focusing on building out of the back. Additionally, we should be able to focus on a high press from an opposing team's kick-off.
Practice Focus:
- Build-up out of the defensive third from a goal kick
- High press in the opponent's defensive third
- Spread out
- Look around and pass
- Do not pass into high risk situations (right in front of our goal)
Key Words:
- Spread out
- Head up and pass
Play 1 (Small Sided Games):
5:00-5:15 pm
Small sided games on the teams normal fields. If more than six players come coaches should consider running two small sided games as the purpose of this exercise is to get the players as many touches as possible in a game like situation.
Agility:
5:15-5:25 pm
Tag:
The purpose of this agility session is to get the players making sharp left, right and backwards turns and cuts.
Make a box that that is approximately 20x30 yards (width of the field). Coaches should adjust this based on their observations of the game. All but two of the players are the salmons and they start at one end. Three of the players are taggers. The rest of the players are runners. When the coach says "go" the taggers try and tag the runners. When are tagger tags a runner the runner has to take a knee until all of the runners have been tagged. Then change out the taggers and repeat the game.
Water Break
5:25 - 5:30 pm
Give the players a very short water break. Make them run to their water and back.
Practice:
All of the teams except the Bumblebees will do this exercise. The Bumblebees will do skills training as developed by Jimmy and Savannah.
The focus for this exercise is to get the Blue team (focus team) to successfully build up from a goal kick. The Red team will focus on pressing in Blue's defensive third in order to intercept the ball and score a goal.
As we have done this before the coaches should be able to focus on more and more detailed aspects of the exercise. The keeper and the left and right backs should have the basics of this. Focus on making sure the accuracy of the keeper's goal kick. Focus on where the left and right back are facing to prepare themselves for the next pass. Focus on the full and midfielder from the other side of the field moving into position. Once you have this then work heavily with the Red team to get the high press working and them aggressively challenging the player with the ball and cutting off passing lanes. Additionally, caution them about risky passes back in front of their own goal.
Rules
- Blue starts with goal kick
- Red behind the build out line
- Blue score on pugs and Red on big goal
- Any stoppage of play start with a goal kick
Training Focus:
- Focus first on Blue
- Get it correct on Left side and then try Right side
- Then focus on Red and their high press
Blue Concept (focus team):
- Spread blue out
- Goalie passes left to Blue LB
- Blue right back and right midfield come to blue cones in the middle
- Blue RB is there for defense
- Blue RM is there for a pass
- Blue LB passes it to Blue LM who passes it to Blue Fwd
Red Concept:
- Red CBs stay between the ball and the goal
- Red Fwd and Mids on build out line (midfield)
- Red RM goes on kick to cut off passing lane down the side lines
- Red Fwd goes to get the ball
- Red LM goes in front of the goal to cut off pass
Play 2:
5:45-6:00 pm
The focus for this scrimmage is how they effectively build up from a goal kick and how they high press against a goal kick. If they do not do it well, have them do it again.
This scrimmage will not have any coaches on the field as players.
23 March
Sam will create the match-ups and field assignments based on number of players per team that show up. He will attempt to make it that all players get as much playing time as possible and that teams stay together as much as possible.
